Summer is upon us, which means that
we are entering the most busy moving months of the year. The
majority of people who move into a new home or rental do it
in the summer when weather is not an issue and while school
is out of session, so that the kids can start a new year in
their new school if they’re moving districts.
If you’re moving this summer, one of the first things
you should consider is whether or not you need to hire professional
movers to get the job done properly. Although many like to
focus on DIY homemaking these days, moving your family’s
belongings may well be a good time to call in a professional.
Depending on how many rooms you’re moving, how many
belongings you own, and how far you’re moving, professional
movers may be a downright necessity.
Regardless of whether or not you’re hiring movers for
your move, there are some simple steps you should take to
ensure that your move is a successful one.
#1: Think Backwards
For many of us, our first instinct is to pack our home grouped
the way it is now, in the home we’re moving out of.
The move goes much more seamlessly, though, if you instead
think of grouping your belongings by how you’ll need
them in the new home. If the kids share a room at the current
home but will have their own rooms at the new house, for example,
pack their things separately so that each individual child’s
belongings can be moved into their new bedroom.
#2: Document Your Current Setups
In today’s day and age, electronics make up a big part
of the household. Instead of just unplugging everything and
moving it right away, pay attention to how your wires are
situated so that you can easily get everything back up and
running at the new house. You might even want to consider
taking a photograph of hookups so that you can mimic their
setup exactly in the new home.
#3: Pack Chemicals Carefully
Chemicals such as paint, pesticides, and cleaning solutions
can be heavy and they’re noxious and potentially harmful
when spilled. If you can leave anything behind or dispose
of it before your move, do so. If not, make sure to secure
all containers and move chemicals separate from each other
and from other belongings.
#4: Create Systems
You’ll want to create a system for packing small items
that can’t be lost, such as screws to hold furniture
together or plugs for certain appliances. One solution is
to attach a small ziplock bag to the piece that small parts
correspond to, so that you can be sure everything stays together
and nothing gets lost.
#5: Hire Sitters
Moving is serious stuff. Children can get injured and pets
can get lost while doors are opening and closing and heavy
belongings are being moved. Rather than risk injury or loss,
hire a babysitter for the kids and a pet sitter for your pets.
Everyone will be much happier and safer in the long run! |
