In the world of moving, there are good
experiences, and then there are horror stories. From hidden
costs to damaged belongings (and no parties claiming responsibility),
moving can be a scary thing if you don’t do it right.
Finding the right moving company is the second most important
part of the moving process -- second only to finding a place
to move to, that is.
If you are getting ready to move and are in need of a good
moving company, follow the following tips in order to make
sure that you don’t end up living out a moving nightmare.
Get Recommendations from Reputable
Parties
When you’re moving, you are dealing with a lot of different
types of professionals - particularly, your real estate agent.
The same way that wedding planners often know which caterers
are best to go with, your real estate agent has had a lot
of experience with local moves. He or she will be able to
tell you which companies previous clients had good
moving experiences with, and which companies left a lot
to desire.
Don’t Go In Blind
Just because your real estate agent suggests a particular
company, it doesn’t mean that you should necessarily
go with that company at first sight. Do your own legwork in
making sure that the companies that are recommended to you
are reputable. A reputable
moving company should have a website, should be contactable
via telephone, and should be willing to provide you with professional
references.
Do a Home Visit
Moving requires the coordination of a lot of logistics. The
company that will be moving your belongings needs to know
the space that the belongings are moving out of in order to
know the type of planning that the move is going to require.
The representative who visits your home should be able to
give you strong advice on how to best prepare for the move,
and he or she should be able to answer any questions you might
have.
Get Estimates
You should get a
moving estimate from any company that you’re considering
working with. It’s best to get estimates from a few
different companies so that you can compare the fee they require
versus the services they’ll be providing.
Be Smart About Contracts
A contract is a form of protection both for the company providing
a service and, importantly for you, the person who the service
is being provided to. Make sure that the contract that your
moving company gives you is comprehensive and covers every
aspect of the move.
Know About Claims
Claims and the way the company you work with handles claims
is a very important area of knowledge for you to go into the
move with. Should anything be damaged in your move, what will
happen?
Pay Attention to Appearances
It’s extremely important that you work with a legitimate
professional company for your move. Don’t be afraid
to look closely at the company’s trucks, the appearance
of their workers, and the overall demeanor of the team. You
want people who are completely professional. |
