As anyone who has ever had a bad moving
experience can attest, working with the wrong moving
company can be the difference between a successful move
and a total nightmare. Moving is a highly sensitive process,
as it involves safe packing and transportation of your most
beloved belongings, such as art, heirlooms, appliances, and
musical instruments. You need to work with a company that
you know that you can trust in order to ensure that each and
every one of your belongings make it from point A to point
B safely and in-tact.
If you’re looking for the perfect moving company to
complete your move, follow some of the tips below:
A Local Reputation is Key
Many moving companies are family owned and receive their business
through word of mouth. Recommendations are a powerful way
for a business to find new customers, and for you to find
a moving company that you know you can trust. The firsthand
experience of a happy customer is much more valuable than
any ads you could possibly see on television or online.
If you’re looking for a mover to work with, the first
thing to do is to ask friends, family members, colleagues,
and neighbors for recommendations. Do you know someone who
moved recently? Find out who he or she used, what the experience
was like, and whether or not he or she would recommend his
or her movers to you.
Do Your Homework!
If a friend or acquaintance is able to recommend a moving
company to you, do your research. Call the company and find
out whether they are willing to come to your home to do an
in-person estimate. A company’s willingness to do an
in-home
moving estimate is key: you want to know that they are
willing to go the extra mile and really get to know your move
before it happens.
Be aware of any red flags that may pop up as you’re
getting to know a company. Feel free to ask questions and
expect full, transparent answers from the representative that
you’re speaking with. Make sure to confirm whether the
company intends to complete the move themselves with their
own employed movers, or if they outsource moves to other movers.
If it’s the latter, you might as well move on.
There are also a series of factual questions you should ask.
The following is information that should be available to you
as a customer:
• How long the company
has been doing business
• The company’s
full name
• The locations of the
company’s offices and storage facilities
• Pertinent contact information
including email addresses, websites, and both local and toll
free phone numbers
• License numbers from
DOT and MC
Lastly, you will want to make sure that the company is willing
to provide you with professional
references (if they aren’t willing, walk away).
You will also want to reach out to each of the provided references
to talk about their experiences with the company. |
